For practicum students

Plan your practicum supervision search.

Use this public guide to understand the process, prepare for fit conversations and identify potential supervisors who welcome student inquiries.

Find supervisors for students

The practicum guide and public directory are free to browse. Paid membership is only needed for private community access and member resources. See membership options.

Practicum matching intake is not currently open.

This page remains available as an educational guide, and the public directory can support your independent search. STEP is not currently accepting practicum placement or matching applications. Your educational institution must confirm whether a supervisor meets its requirements. University-specific student and alumni spaces are now being developed separately in Affiliates.

A practical sequence

Move from requirements to a confirmed arrangement.

Start with the rules that apply to your program. A promising profile becomes an option only after the right people verify it.
  1. 01

    Confirm your program requirements

Ask your practicum or placement team what credentials, experience, documentation and approval process a supervisor must meet.

  2. 02

    Build a focused shortlist

Filter STEP profiles for supervisors who list students as a supported professional stage and are accepting inquiries.

  3. 03

    Have a fit conversation

Compare approach, availability, fees, meeting format and how the supervisor supports learning during practicum.

  4. 04

    Verify before you commit

Your school, you and the supervisor should confirm eligibility, expectations, agreements and required records in writing.

Before opening the directory

Know what your program needs you to verify.

Requirements can differ by institution, placement and professional pathway. Bring a written checklist into every supervisor conversation.

Required supervisor credentials and good-standing checks

Minimum frequency, duration and format of supervision

Evaluation, hour-tracking and reporting responsibilities

Placement agreements, insurance and confidentiality terms

Who provides final approval before supervision begins

Questions for a fit conversation

Compare more than credentials.

Eligibility matters, but so do communication, structure and the kind of learning relationship you can build together.

Eligibility

01
  • Does my program approve this supervisor and their credentials?
  • What experience do they have with practicum students?
  • Can they meet every required supervision and documentation standard?

Learning relationship

02
  • How do they give feedback and respond when I feel uncertain?
  • How are goals reviewed as my practicum develops?
  • What is their approach to power, identity and cultural humility?

Structure and logistics

03
  • How often will we meet, and in what format?
  • What are the fees, cancellation terms and availability?
  • How are urgent questions handled between scheduled meetings?

Roles and records

04
  • Who is responsible for evaluations, reports and hour tracking?
  • How are confidentiality and client information protected?
  • What happens if the relationship is not a good fit?

Matching intake paused

Keep using the guide while placement matching is on hold.

STEP is not currently operating a practicum placement or matching service. This guide and the supervisor directory remain available for independent research. Any future placement workflow will be published only after its scope, responsibilities and institutional participation are formally confirmed.
