Begin with eligibility

Use this guide to orient yourself, then confirm the current criteria and your own circumstances directly with CRPO.

A six-part pathway

Prepare for the role before you offer the service.

These steps preserve STEP’s public overview and keep the regulatory criteria separate from the practical work of building a thoughtful supervision practice.
  1. 01

    Be registered in a psychotherapy-practising profession

    Be in good standing with one of the Ontario regulatory colleges CRPO identifies as permitting members to practise psychotherapy.

  2. 02

    Meet the independent-practice threshold

    CRPO’s current criteria include completion of 1,000 direct client contact hours and 150 hours of clinical supervision.

  3. 03

    Gain five years of clinical practice

    CRPO currently looks for five years of extensive psychotherapy experience counted from graduation from psychotherapy education or training.

  4. 04

    Complete the required supervision learning

    Complete 30 hours of directed learning in providing clinical supervision. For anyone who begins supervising on or after April 1, 2026, CRPO specifies 30 hours of coursework.

  5. 05

    Complete the CRPO learning module

    Review CRPO expectations and responsibilities for clinical supervisors.

  6. 06

    Begin providing supervision

    Support professional development, safe client care, feedback, evaluation and appropriate documentation.
